One of the best novels I read in 2017, Haruki Murakami’s 1Q84 is, to say the least, a masterpiece of imaginative fiction.
It has been months since I read this book– my first mind-blowing introduction to the literary magician that is Murakami. A fantastical enigma of a story, I’ve been, all this while, intimidated by the thought of attempting to dissect 1Q84. To pull it apart. To apply the eyeglass of literary criticism to its obscure pages.
Yet I am compelled to. Partly because I simply love that book so dearly, partly because Murakami has since become one of my favourite authors. But mostly because of the thrill this challenge gives me.
This novel traces the journey of two separated, life-long lovers. But far from being just another boring love story, Murakami weaves in fantasy, political conspiracy, murder, “little people” and a dead goat into this wonderland plot. It is a story that will stay with me for life.
So join me, if you wish to, by picking up a copy of this so that you can follow along in my upcoming post on 1Q84! It is a pretty lengthy read, but one worth every page of your time.
See you on the flip side.
